Moving Overseas with Children
Taking steps to ensure a smooth transition for your children's move overseas is important. Of course their involvement will depend on their age, but just like you, they will need time to prepare and say their goodbyes.
Here are some basic suggestions to help you and your child adjust to your new location.
- They will take their cues from you - Your reactions have a big influence on your children. Keep expectations low, especially initially and stay calm as you all will be learning new things and making a transition.
- Learn about your new country together - Find some books, DVDs or information on the web to learn about your new location. Help your children know what to expect in the new culture. Teach them a few key phrases like "please" "thank you" in the new language.
- Say Goodbye - Help your child say goodbye to people, places and things. Take pictures of favorite people and places and pets and make a small photo album for take along.
- Keep the familiar - Take a few familiar toys, books and games for your new home. Give your child has some time and attention each day with a bedtime story, a walk or other family routines.
- New experiences - Include your child in opportunities to explore your new surroundings. Your children will provide a wonderful entree into your new culture. Be open to the culture and learn about the expectations of children and child-raising. Acknowledge the differences in styles and then decide whether to follow their way or your way.
- Establish your family and home - Living out of suitcases for too long doesn't help you or your child to feel settled. Make it your space for your family, and begin your own routines, schedules and traditions in your new home. Enlist an "extended family" of aunts and uncles with others on your team, or local friends. At the same time, keep connections with grandparents, family with calls, pictures, tapes. SYPE is a great way to stay in touch.
- Listen to your child - In the midst of transitions and trying to get yourself settled in your home and work, be sure to listen to your child. Ask about their feelings; listen to their fears and doubts and give them support and encouragement.
Moving overseas with children can be complicated and stressful. The good news is that children often end up adjusting quicker to living abroad than adults!
