Start with One
The holidays are over, 2016 is in full-swing and you may be asking yourself, what's next? How can this year be different from last? How can I use my skills and time to make a difference in this big world? How can I love better, serve more, gain new perspectives and have new experiences?
Volunteering is always a great place to start. It connects our passions, interests and skills with a specific need. It allows us to leverage who we are and what we know to help transform people and communities. It is love in action.
However, when we volunteer in any capacity, we can often become overwhelmed with the need. And this overwhelming feeling can often lead to paralysis, where you question whether your service is helping at all. The truth is, no one person can fix it all. No one person can meet every need.
But what we can do is start with one.
One day at a time, one conversation at a time, one act of kindness, one smile, one sacrifice. And this one act, although small, can move mountains. One act of love can replicate into two, and then to four and so on until a person, a family, a community, a nation, the world is changed. Mother Teresa says it best, "If you can't feed 100 people, then just feed one."
Let us not get distracted by doing too much that we end up missing the one small moment, day after day, that can bring hope to those without. Volunteering, whether it is next door or overseas, could be the next step you take in order to serve more, love better and be a part of something beyond yourself. This year could be the year that you started with one and a life was changed.
How will you start with one?
