The Sound of Music in Jordan
Meet Joy! Joy is an IDEAS Associate and Julliard-trained violinist who lives and works in Jordan. Learn more about her and her dream of bringing classical music to school children in The Sound of Music in Jordan.
1. Hi Joy! Tell us about yourself.
My name is Joy, I am from South Korea. I started studying the violin when I was five years old. I went to the United States when I was 16 and continued my music studies, graduating from Indiana University and the Juilliard School. I am now a music teacher at our partner school in Jordan.
2. Could you give us an overview on your project in Jordan?
We are bringing high quality music education to the children of our partner school in Jordan, and our vision is to work towards building a youth orchestra there in 7-10 years. It will be the first youth orchestra in the history of this city! We believe that by interacting closely with the students and the parents for the next 10 years we will be able to make a sustainable change in their lives. Music is something very unique. It teaches what is beautiful, and it is not threatening. As one of the students said after the music camp this summer, "Music is love and happiness put together."
4. What does music mean to you?
Since I was five, I almost can't remember a day I didn't play the violin or piano. It's clear that I was attached to music and as I continued to work vigorously, I was not able to separate myself from it. It was more like a lifestyle, an identity. However, when I began to search for the purpose of this musical gift given to me, I realized that it was never mine to hold onto. And when God wants to use it in a specific way, I should surrender it with gladness. The transition was tough, but it was worth it! Now music to me is a wonderful vehicle for love. I am thankful that God has given me this gift, to share the fullness of life with others in the best way that I can.
5. What are the greatest needs for your project right now?
I began teaching general music to grades 4-6. Although I love teaching and have much experience in it, general music education is not my professional area so I am gathering a lot of information and working hard on making it fun and professional. I need more information and help in collecting ideas and resources. Right now Pinterest is my new best friend!
6. Can you tell us a recent story of impact or transformation?
After the first summer violin camp at our school, the students shared some amazing stories. One boy said that he made 100 mistakes but the teachers were so loving and patient, he felt wonderful knowing that there is someone who will help you. One girl said that music is teamwork, and she loves that they work as a team. The video below will highlight interviews of three students who participated in the music camp. Enjoy!
