Your Valuable Time and Money
You will be investing your valuable time and money to volunteer. The organization you go with can make or break your experience. Do your research and ask the hard questions. Your best bet is to go with an established and reputable organization.
Here are some key questions to ask:- How long has the organization existed?
- What is its mission?
- What role do local organizations have in the project?
- Does the organization have any specific religious affiliation?
- How are volunteers matched with opportunities, bot in terms of skills and interests?
- How much does the program cost?
- Does the organization provide an orientation?
- Is there any special training needed for the work to be done?
- How will the organization care for you while you are volunteering?
- How does the organization handle emergencies?
Obviously not everyone fits with every organization. The key is to know what you are looking for and find the organization that best matches it. Pay close attention to the extent to which the organization is open and willing to answer all of your questions and concerns. Avoid the common pitfall of making any assumptions. Get all your questions answered before you go!
